As the Petrie Turns: Say It Ain't Toine

Yesterday (I know, I know...), Marty McNeal reportered that the Kings are mulling a sign-and-trade for Antoine Walker. I've written about my dislike for Toine before, but that sour taste will only grow as I see more passages like this in the local rag:

"Agent Mark Bartelstein called the 6-foot-10 Walker one of the league's top 20 players. That's arguable..."

No, Marty - that's laughable. To call Toine one of the league's top 20 forwards would be arguable. How many real NBA fans would actually argue with Bartelstein when hearing that ludicrous statement? Methinks most would roll their eyes and walk away laughing.

For Bartelstein's (and McNeal's) benefit, here are 20 players off the top of my head that are better than Toine , in no particular order:

Shaq, LeBron, Kobe, Dwyane, Timmy, KG, Amare, Dirk, TMac, AI, Pierce, Jermaine O'Neal, Ray Allen, JKidd, Peja, Elton Brand, Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Vinsanity, Yao, Dwight Howard, Nash, AK47, Okafor (not Patrick, sadly), Melo, Manu, Arenas, Bosh, Joe Johnson, Marion, Gasol, Rip, KMart (not Kevin, sadly), Artest, Larry Hughes, Zach Randolph, Bibby, Brad Miller, Baron Davis, Tony Parker, Starbury.

Okay, so that's 42. And those are inarguable - meaning it'd be pretty damn difficult to point to any of the above and with a straight face say that Walker is a better player. There are heaps of others who are a season or two of expectable production from joining that list - Iguodala, Dalembert, any of the top rookies, Rashard Lewis, Maggette, Ben Gordon, Chandler, Jason Terry, Josh Howard. I'd argue that all of those are better than Toine, but I'd at least have to argue with some people about it.

In sum, just say no to Toine.
